The GeForce RTX 4090 surprised the public by consuming much energy and debuting a new specific power connector, the 16-pin 12VHPWR. However, the future RTX 5090 will likely follow this path and launch with two 600 W 12VHPWR connectors and a very high energy consumption, according to information from the website TweakTown.

♦ How many watts will the GeForce RTX 5090 use?

Sources close to the outlet point out that Nvidia will launch its upcoming flagship GPU with these two connectors, theoretically making the card capable of pulling up to 1,200 W. While a graphics card alone won't consume all that amount, the expectation is that the chip used in the project will be pretty demanding.

Many rumors suggested that the silicon used in the RTX 5090 would consume close to 600 W, the maximum power the 12VHPWR cable can transmit. Therefore, it would make sense for Nvidia to insert two of these connections into the GPU as a protective measure so that only one connector would not be overloaded.

▪ More connectors and more complication

The logistics of these connections for users are somewhat unfriendly. The leading theory about how they work is that one of the connectors would be powered by a native 12VHPWR cable, while the other could be used with an adapter for standard 12V-2x6 power supply cables. Users with power supplies with two 12VHPWR inputs could connect these cables to the video card without any problems.

If the rumors come true, the first usage mode seems the most realistic for most users. Although the number is growing, only enthusiast models have two or more 16-pin connectors. Still, launching an RTX 5090 in this format would certainly make power supply manufacturers update their products.

In any case, many speculations indicate that the GeForce RTX 5090 will not have any mercy on energy consumption. With no set date yet, the product should be launched in the first quarter of 2025.
