Following the teasers released last week, Motorola launched the Motorola Edge 50 this Thursday (1), a new member of the brand's family of premium cell phones that arrives with a curious feat: the first thin smartphone to obtain a certification military resistance. Despite the focus on durability, the device also stands out in the rest of the technical sheet, which includes a Snapdragon chip, a robust camera set, and a large battery.

The main feature of the Edge 50 is its construction, which maintains its low thickness (the device is 7.8 mm) and the look of the rest of the family while at the same time having IP68 and MIL-STD-810H certifications. With both, the phone is resistant to water, dust, impacts, shock, extreme temperatures, and even salt spray (for example).

The materials were also carefully chosen, which are quite premium for the category. We have metal edges, a Gorilla Glass 5 glass screen, and two types of finishes depending on the color: Jungle Green (dark green) and Peach Fuzz (peach tone, Pantone color of the year) adopt fabric that imitates leather, while Koala Gray uses fabric that tries to imitate the soft sensation of suede.

The rest of the technical sheet is respectable, starting with processing the unprecedented Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 AE (Accelerated Edition). The chip is a version of the traditional Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 used in rivals like the Samsung Galaxy M55, with higher operating frequencies of 2.5 GHz versus the 2.4 GHz of the standard variant. Even with the improvement, it is unlikely that there will be drastic differences in daily use. The chip is complemented by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

The screen draws attention to its 6.7-inch OLED panel, which has a 1.5K resolution of 2712 x 1220 pixels and a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. It also supports HDR with brightness peaks of 1,600 nits in small areas. The display supports the stereo sound system with Dolby Atmos spatial audio technology.

Motorola's new cell phone also has robust camera specifications, including a 32 MP selfie lens and a trio of rear lenses consisting of a 50 MP primary sensor with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and optical stabilization (OIS), ultrawide with 13 MP macro function and 120° field of view, and 10 MP telephoto with PDAF, OIS, and 3x optical zoom.

The Edge 50's battery is 5,000 mAh, with 68 W fast charging and 15 W wireless charging. The company does not comment on the total charging time, but considering the other models in the line, it is expected that the device spends little time in the socket, offering a high recharging speed.

The package includes 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, an optical fingerprint reader under the screen, and the Android 14 operating system, which runs under the Hello UX interface packed with Moto AI Artificial Intelligence resources. Two major system updates and three years of security updates are also promised, reasonable numbers for the segment.

▪ Price and availability ▪

The Motorola Edge 50 arrives in India first, with availability scheduled for August 8th and a suggested price of 25,999 rupees, or around US$310.

There is still no information about the device's launch in other countries, but it is almost certain that we will see it in more locations.
